Locating Sustainable Meat Farmers
November 22nd, 2012 | Posted by in Organic FarmingFollowing sustainable farm practices for meat production is absolutely essential. Meat, poultry and dairy products are treated with various health hazardous substances like contaminated groundwater, hormones and antibiotic resistant bacteria. Therefore, you should try buying meat products from local farmers as you can ask them questions about their farming methods. Prefer free range livestock farmers who sell shares in meat CSA's. Some enquiries that you can make are asking them if their animals are raised on pasture and given organic feed. Find out if the cows and lambs are grass finished. Avoid farmers who give antibiotics to healthy animals. Also, check how they handle manure as is should be left untreated to pollute local water systems. Also, ask if they have healthier heritage breeds which are allowed to live outside and not in cages.
